Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to welcome you all to Reception and look forward to working with you during the year. In Reception the teacher is Miss Kavanagh and the teaching assistants are Miss Peever and Mrs Bates.

So far the children have all settled in well and are enjoying learning in their new class. All staff are so proud of how the children have adapted to their new environment, rules and routines. We are very excited to see all of our children shine in their learning.

May I take this opportunity to remind you of a few important things:

Drink Bottles

All children should have a named water bottle (not juice) that is to be brought into school every day.

Snack Money

Snack money of £1.50 should be sent in a named envelope in on a Monday morning. The children have a snack provided in the morning such as crumpets, crackers and cheese, toast. All children will receive a piece of fruit as well as milk or water. Children are not allowed to bring their own snack into Reception as we try to encourage the children to try a variety of new and healthy foods.

Reading

We will listen to your child read regularly in school and we expect children to access reading eggs three times per week as part of their home learning. Regular practise of such a vital skill really does make a difference to your child.

PE Kit

We expect children to come to school wearing their PE kit every Wednesday. Children will access physical activities in our EYFS environment daily, however, they will only need to wear a PE kit on a Wednesday. If your child has their ears pierced, please remove the earrings or cover them with plasters on this day.

Uniform

Please ensure that all uniform is named. All children should bring a waterproof coat to school each day as we do play outside in all weathers whenever possible.

Learning Journey

During this half term our learning journey will be Traditional Tales. Please find our key focuses in specific areas below.

Literacy

In our literacy learning we will be focusing on two key texts ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We will use these texts to captivate children in their learning enabling them to apply their phonic knowledge to write, words, labels and captions.

We will also be learning how to write our names, forming letters correctly, ensuring that there are no reversals.

In Reception we have daily phonics lessons to learn new phonemes and tricky words. We practise these phonemes and words, learning how to apply them in our reading and writing.

Maths

This half term we will be focusing on number. This includes counting, representing numerals and quantities and subitising.

The children will also practise and apply taught mathematical skills in their weekly challenges and in their own learning time.

RE

In our RE lessons we will cover the topics of ‘Good News and Harvest’. Children will participate I daily collective worship and learn their new class prayers.

Parental involvement

Here at Latchford St James we are keen to work with parents as partners. If your child has impressed, you then please tell us all about it via email (Latchford_primary@warrington.gov.uk) so we can celebrate their learning too!

If you ever have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to speak to us, as it is vital that we work together to help your child have a happy and successful year in school. If you are unable to speak to us at school, please ring and leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely

Miss D Kavanagh
