Playing The Glockenspiel!

Our music lesson this week involved us learning to play the glockenspiel for the first time! We have been learning an R&B song called 'Let your spirit fly' and this week the children practised playing 3 notes on the glockenspiel in time with the beat.

Sculptures

This week we started our new art unit on sculputres. The children worked with Mrs Forshaw to explore modelling clay and different techniques we can use to shape it, including making a slip. The children were amazing!

Thank you to everyone who attended our 'Meet the Teacher' evening yesterday. For those that couldn't attend, please click the PDF link to view the information that was shared.

Working Scientifically

Yesterday in Science we started our new topic ‘Animals Including Humans’. We worked scientifically with each other to sort and classify animals into a Venn diagram based on what they eat.

Marvellous Maths

Earlier this week, Year 3 started our Place Value work in Maths. We started by exploring Base 10 equipment, understanding the value of each piece of Base 10 and then using that to make a Base 10 monster! We then had to figure out what our monsters were ‘worth’ by counting our hundreds, tens and ones to make a 3-digit number.

Welcome to Year 3 2021-2022!

Hello and welcome to our new Year 3 class page! We have had a lovely few days back at school getting to know each other, learning new games in P.E and making dream jars containing our dreams for Year 3 and beyond! We are super excited to start the rest of our Year 3 learning next week.

Celebration Assembly 9th July

Well done to our reader, writer, learner, role model and dojo champion of the week!

Tie-Dyeing!

In our art lessons we have been learning about patterns and designs. This week we all had a go at tie-dyeing a piece of fabric! We learned how to fold, twist and turn our piece of fabric in different ways so that we could create different patterns with our tie-dye. We tried to create spirals, polka-dots and stripes and then we all added our tie-dye to the fabric. We look forward to seeing our end results!

Shadows In Science

In Science Year 3 have been learning all about light and shadows. This week we went outside and explored how shadows are made and tried to make different shadows using our hands! We have learned that opaque objects do not allow light to pass through it and that is how a shadow is formed.

Geography

In Geography we have been learning about rivers. We have been looking at different features of a river and using atlases to locate the main rivers in the U.K. We will be looking in more detail at the River Mersey which is our most local river in our future lessons and learning all about the course of the Mersey and its uses.

Chester Zoo!

Year 3 had a wonderful time on our school trip to Chester Zoo! We loved seeing lots of animals and learning all about them and their habitats. We particularly enjoyed seeing the giraffes because we have been learning about the story of a giraffe named Zeraffa in our English book 'Zeraffa Giraffa' by Dianne Hofmeyr. We have been learning all about how Zeraffa was taken from the plains of Africa and sent to the King of France by the Pasha of Egypt. It was amazing to see the giraffes so close and find out lots of interesting facts about them!

P.E

Our new unit in P.E this half term is all about health and fitness. We are focussing on being able to explain why we need to warm-up and cool down as well as being able to describe how and why our body changes during and after exercise. This week we were trying to set our personal best scores in a game called 'Tunnels'. The children had to roll a ball 10m and chase after it, get in front of it and let it pass through their legs as many times as possible before it reached the 10m mark! It was a hard challenge but everybody worked really hard and had lots of fun! We will repeat our personal best challenge at the end of the unit to see if we can beat our scores.

Sports Day Spectacular!

This year's sports day was a massive success! Our whole school took part in a carousel of sports activities for the entire day, and Year 3 had the most amazing time. There was laughter and smiles all around - staff included! A huge thank you to Mr Hayes and the staff for organising such a fabulous day for us all, and well done to all of our children for taking part!

D.T.

This week in D.T. we made pizzas! We applied the cutting skills we have learned in previous lessons to help us put toppings on our pizzas. We also used our spreading skills to help us spread the tomato sauce on the base of our pizza. We took our pizzas home to cook and enjoy. We had such a lovely lesson, thank you to Miss Meakin for organising this lesson for us!

Celebration Assembly 21st May

Well done to our reader, writer, learner, role model and dojo champion of the week! Also a big well done to Ayesha, Lydia and Riley for improving their studio speeds the most this week on TT Rockstars.

Amazing Writing in Year 3!

Year 3 have been practising slow writing this week and have created a short paragraph about a mysterious creature in the deep forest. They wanted to share some of their writing with you! Here is just a small selection of our fabulous writing.

Catfish

Gymnastics

Year 3 loved our Real Gym session this week! We were lucky enough to try out all of the gymnastics equipment and practise mirroring shapes with our partner both on and off the apparatus. We had a lovely morning.

Dance

This week in dance we have been working on creating a partner sequence! We have been practising our shapes by making tall shapes and low shapes, as well as practising how to transition into our different shapes. We then performed our dances to our class and gave each other some really important feedback so that we can improve our work next time.

D.T.

Our unit this half term in D.T is cooking and nutrition. This week we have been practising different cutting skills and using the bridge and claw techniques to cut different types of fruits.

This was a tricky skill to master but we all worked so hard and did not give up. As always, our favourite part was taste-testing our fruits at the end of the lesson!

Celebration Assembly 7th May

Well done to our reader, writer, learner, role model and dojo champion of the week! Also a big well done to Holly Pearl, Lydia and Amelia for improving their studio speeds the most this week on TT Rockstars.

D.T.

Our unit this half term in D.T is cooking and nutrition. We are linking our D.T lessons with our learning on the Romans and each week we are making one part of a Roman feast!

This week we focussed on what the Romans ate for breakfast. Our research told us the Romans ate bread for their breakfasts and so we practised the skill of spreading butter on bread. In Roman times, the people used butter to help heal wounds rather than eat it like we do nowadays! We practised using a knife to spread butter properly and also learned how to cut our bread into halves and quarters. We then considered if the breakfast would be something a Roman would enjoy and if bread and butter is part of a healthy, balanced diet. Our favourite part of the lesson was when Miss Meakin allowed us to taste-test our bread to make sure the Romans would enjoy it! We had a fantastic afternoon.

Celebration Assembly 30th April

Well done to our reader, writer, learner, role model and dojo champion of the week!

Testing Friction!

This week we have been learning about forces in Science and we decided to investigate friction. We planned our experiment and set it up on three different surfaces. We considered how we can make our test as fair as possible and measured how far a toy car could travel along different surfaces. We recorded our results and discussed ways we could improve our investigation for next time.

Welcome Back!

Yesterday we welcomed all children back to school and Year 3 were so excited to see their friends! We had a lovely day creating watercolour paintings of whales based on our English books 'Big Blue Whale' by Nicola Davies and 'This Morning I Met a Whale' by Michael Morpurgo. We also linked our learning with measuring in Maths and we went onto the playground to measure the length of a blue whale! Did you know they grow to 30m long? The children measured using a trundle wheel and metre sticks and then we tried to demonstrate this by spreading ourselves along the 30m line! We are really enjoying learning all about the blue whales.

Our TT Rockstars Champions

Well done to Bailey, Kancuela and Maddison for being the TT Rockstars champions this week and for improving their studio speeds the most!

World Book Day - 4th March 2021

Today we have been celebrating World Book Day! The children in school and at home have been taking part in lots of wonderful activities linked with the book 'The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse' by Charlie Mackesy. This book has lots of lovely themes around love, friendship, kindness and hope which link beautifully with our Christian Values. We started our day with a Google Meet where we dressed up as our favourite book characters or brought a prop so we could guess who we all were! We then listened to some of our teachers and TAs reading Charlie Mackesy's book and looked carefully at some of the quotes in the book. We created pieces of artwork linked to love, we found a 'quiet spot' that we love and described how it makes us feel, and also thought about what we want to be when we're older. We also joined some live readings throughout the day from some of our staff who shared their favourite books with us! The children and our staff have had such a lovely day.

David Walliams Assembly for World Book Day

Yesterday, the children were lucky enough to join the author David Walliams to discuss reading, his books and World Book Day! The children both in school and at home really enjoyed this assembly and can't wait for World Book Day!

Fun Friday 12th February - Chinese New Year

This week's 'Fun Friday' was all about understanding Chinese New Year. Our Fun Fridays have been so good for our mental health and well-being and myself and Mrs Forshaw have loved seeing all of Year 3's fantastic photos and videos of the children enjoying the activities with their families!

The children chose from a range of different tasks to complete such as Chiense food tasting, making delicious Chinese New Year treats, taking part in Tai Chi to calm and relax, learning to write their names using the Chinese alphabet and making Chinese lanterns and masks! The children and their families have worked so hard at home and have had a wonderful day.

Year 3 Outstanding Home Learning

Well done to Maddison who earned the Star Award postcard this week. Maddison has worked so hard at home every single day and always tries her hardest to be the best that she can be. She also has completed lots of extra home learning and Miss Connolly is so proud of her attitude to learning. Well done Maddison!

Soil Investigation

This week some of us have got our hands dirty and conducted some soil investigations! The children went out into their gardens and places in the local area (safely, sensibly and respectfully) and took some soil samples. They took the samples home and poured water on them to see the different types of soil they could find in their samples! The children learned that it depends on the size of the particles in the soil as to whether they float or not in their jars. They also looked at the information sheets they were given to work out what soil they had found based on where it settled in the jar when water was added. Well done to those who took part, your results are very interesting!

Fun Friday - Children's Mental Health Week 2021

Today, Friday 5th February, we have had 'Fun Friday' in school! Looking after our mental health and well-being is so important and so we decided to spend a whole day doing lots of fun activities linked with Children's Mental Health Week 2021. The theme this year was 'Express Yourself' and we set the children some activities to allow them to express themselves through art, poetry, dance/movement, music and more! Our artwork was linked to the book 'Beautiful Oops' by Barney Saltzberg, where we explored how to turn our mistakes into wonderful pieces of art! Some of the children also learned how to sing a song in sign language and some of us created our own dances to S Club 7's 'Bring It All Back' (which is also one of Miss Connolly's favourite songs!). Miss Connolly and Mrs Forshaw have been amazed at all the wonderful work Year 3 have created today and the photos and videos we have received have made us smile all day long. Well done Year 3, we are very proud!

Sewing Sensations!

Today Year 3 started our DT topic. We learned how to tie a knot, thread a needle and we learned how to do a running stitch. The children were fantastic and they persevered even when they were tied up in knots! They all worked independently and Miss Connolly and Mrs Forshaw are so proud of their achievements.

Welcome to Y3

Our first week in Year 3

Miss Connolly and Mrs Forshaw have loved meeting our lovely new Year 3 class this week!

As a class, we have spent our first few days in school getting to know each other and learning about how we are keeping safe in school.

We tested our children on our summer challenge of naming the bones in the human body and the amount of information the children have already learned at home has left us teachers speechless (well done parents/carers for your fabulous work too!).

The children have really enjoyed spending time on their own individual laptops that they all receive when they start Year 3, and have been practising key ICT skills and our times tables on TT Rockstars. We have also been doing lots of art and craft work and the children have particularly enjoyed making BFG dream jars for a display in our corridor. Our jars describe our hopes and dreams for Year 3 and beyond, which we painted with watercolour paints and decorated with sequins.

IMG_3520-320x240

We have all had such a lovely first few days together and are looking forward to starting our Year 3 learning next week.
