Welcome to Year 6. We love showcasing our amazing learning and experiences here!

Chemistry with Cabbage - 26th March 2021

Today we have enjoyed a full day of Science, Chemistry with Cabbage! We have spent the day conducting a range of Science experiments (not all involving cabbage!). It's been a fun filled day, just what we needed and we have been looking forward to this experience since September!

Our Finished Masterpieces

We're so proud of our art work this week. We have created collages using oil pastels, watercolours and monochrome patterns for our contrasting backgrounds, and then added features of our chosen animal. We've really enjoyed the process of this art and hope you are impressed!

Art progress!

This week we have been working on art, linked with both our Science topic and Pathways to Write book 'Island' by Jason Chin. We are proud of our work so far and are excited to show you our progress! Photos of the finished pieces will be shared shortly!

Monday 8th March - Back into the swing of things with Art

Today we returned to school, and had a great time spending time with our peers and teachers! The first day back was a great success and felt like we had never been away. We have started to create some artistic masterpieces and will be sharing the journey and process with you. We hope that you enjoy seeing our journey as much as we are enjoying creating it!

Fun Friday - 5th March 2021

Today we enjoyed out final Fun Friday to celebrate the end of home learning! The children watched their favourite film based on a book, clocked some miles for our school fundraising effort, made junk modelling masterpieces and baked some Easter themed treats (we're very eager in Year 6)! We are now looking forward to being back together on Monday.

Our final World Book Day at LSJ!

We celebrated World Book Day today, albeit differently to previous years! Every class in school read the same book, 'The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse' by Charlie Mackesy. We then completed activities based on that book, as well as making time to enjoy our own personal favourite books!

JOHN O GROATS TO LANDS END FUNDRAISER TO IMPROVE OUR OUTDOOR AREA

We would like to raise money for developing our outside areas at school and are planning a walking challenge for everyone. The challenge is to collaboratively travel the distance between Lands Ends and John o’ Groats which is a total of 874 miles. We would like to complete this challenge within a period of six weeks. Our target is to raise £1,000.

So how will this work?

Children, parents and staff will be invited to walk, run, cycle etc as far and as frequently as they can, sending their total  miles for each week in to school. This will enable us to track our journey and show how far we have ‘travelled’ on our map of the UK. To get there in the allocated time we would collectively need to clock up a staggering 147 miles each week!

The challenge will begin tomorrow, Saturday 13th February and finish on Friday 26th March.

Please could you update us weekly via our fundraising email: fundraising@latchfordstjames.co.uk with the total miles you and your child have walked/cycled/run that week. We will announce the total mileage each Friday.

We encourage you to share via Class Dojo any photographs of your child/children completing their activities. There will be certificates for incentives that will run alongside this challenge and we will inform you of these on a weekly basis.

For the half term week perhaps the children could dress up as their favourite character or take a selfie on their walk? Photos will be shared on the website. As we track our ‘journey’, we will update you on famous places and landmarks we may pass.

Anyone who would like to participate, please make donations to our ‘Go Fund Me’ page. A link will be shared on our school website, our Facebook page and Class Dojo.

Fun Friday - 12th February

We celebrated Chinese New Year, with the children having the opportunity to practise a range of skills, including cooking, baking, making Chinese lanterns and much more! The children clearly enjoyed the day. Check out Isobelle's impressive skills in the video!

5th February - Fun Friday!

As part of Children's Mental Health Week, and for a change of routine due to the children coping so well and working extremely hard during lockdown, we had our first Fun Friday, involving no Maths or English! The children were encouraged to express themselves through yoga, art and baking, as well as taking some time for themselves by enjoying hot chocolates, stories and films. This was much deserved and well enjoyed by the children - please see the photos below!

The Selfish Giant

We have just finished our writing based on Oscar Wilde's famous 'The Selfish Giant.' The children have produced some absolutely fantastic writing over the past few weeks, while also getting used to working online via Google Classroom. They have adapted extremely well to our current daily routine and should be proud of themselves.

Our writing unit included focusing on the use of personification, the passive voice and semi-colons to mark boundaries between clauses while studying different parts of the story. Our final piece of the unit was rewriting the story from a different perspective, while incorporating the skills we'd practised. The children really enjoyed this challenge and added their own flairs and writing styles to the traditional story. They all look and sound professional - well done Year 6!
