Implementation

The National Curriculum objectives for PE are covered through delivering a well-planned and balanced curriculum, which all pupils can access at an appropriate level. At Latchford St James CE Primary School children have two hours of PE lessons each week. We utilise the Real PE scheme of work to deliver high quality PE lessons and to provide CPD support for teachers in their planning and delivery of lessons. Opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities are planned for and timetabled. All Year 3 and 4 pupils take part in a swimming programme for one term. Pupils who require swimming ‘catch-up’ lessons are identified in Year 6 and these are delivered to ensure they can confidently swim using a range of strokes.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 pupils develop fundamental movement skills and become increasingly competent and confident utilising them and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. This is built upon in Key Stage 2 so that pupils apply and develop a broader range of skills, learn how to use them in different ways and how to link them to make actions and sequences of movement.

Children are provided with a variety of equipment at lunch and playtimes to encourage them to be active and work together with other pupils. We offer after school sports clubs, as well as annually taking part in a range of sporting competitions against other schools. Sporting successes are also celebrated in our weekly whole-school celebration assembly.

Impact

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. At Latchford St James CE Primary School we use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers’ planning.

Discussions, surveys, analysis of data, learning walks and subject specific monitoring allows us to measure the impact of the quality of teaching and learning for PE.
