Our PSHE curriculum is delivered by teachers following the HeartSmart scheme of work. This provides a toolkit to develop and build resilience, well-being and healthy relationships. It encourages pupils to adopt positive attitudes and be emotionally happy. HeartSmart fully covers the Relationship and Health Education curriculum and supports SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools).

The HeartSmart curriculum has five key elements, called the HeartSmart High Five, and lessons units focus on each of these in turn. The High Five are:

  • Don’t Forget to Let Love In! Learning how important, valued and loved we are.
  • Too Much Selfie Isn’t Healthy! Exploring the importance of others and how to love them well.
  • Don’t Rub it In, Rub it Out! Understanding how to process negative emotion and choose forgiveness to restore relationships.
  • Fake is a Mistake! Unpacking how to bravely communicate truth and be proud of who we are.
  • ‘No Way Through’ Isn’t True! Knowing there is a way through every situation no matter how impossible it may seem.

At Latchford St James we ensure that PSHE is taught at least weekly as we believe it is a vital part of our curriculum. As well as following the HeartSmart scheme there will be occasions when teachers deliver extra PSHE lessons from matters that have arisen. PSHE also forms an integral part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. Specific themed weeks linked to PSHE, such as Anti-Bullying Week, have a high profile in school. Children are taught about keeping themselves safe, including lessons on e-safety and stranger danger.


Pupils at Latchford St James enjoy PSHE lessons and actively engage with their social emotional learning. The impact of our PSHE curriculum is that:

  • Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of Law and Liberty.
  • Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be in-line with national and behaviour will be good.
  • Children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum.
  • Children will become healthy and responsible members of society
  • Children will be on their journey preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.

We use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform future lessons. Discussions, pupil surveys, analysis of data, learning walks and subject specific monitoring allows us to measure the impact of the quality of teaching and learning for PSHE.
